FAQs & OTHER INFO

WHO OR WHAT IS BEERDREDGE?

It’s a site for beer education and beer gifts run by beer writer Mark Dredge. The aim is to increase knowledge about beer and the Beer Flavour Wheels are our main product.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE BEER FLAVOUR WHEELS

We designed them to be a visual tool to help brewers evaluate their beer and to give drinkers and beer professionals the language needed to talk about beer. They are all printed in the UK on thick matt card and come as a set of six wheels (three cards printed back-to-back). The aim is to show a broad range of flavours and the ingredients or processes which produce those qualities, which is why we’ve produced wheels for Hops, Malt and Fermentation which helped define the overall Beer Flavour Wheel. Here’s a post with more info about the wheels.

WHY IS/ISN’T A PARTICULAR FLAVOUR ON THE WHEEL?

The terms used were developed with industry professionals alongside a deep literature search covering existing educational tools (in beer and beyond), books, scientific papers, and more. They aim to present a lexicon of common flavours, but they do not present all the possible flavours. Our perception of flavour is unique and we want to celebrate that by encouraging you to develop your own tasting terms, and applying definition to the broader source-based terms. For example, if you smell citrus then you can narrow that down to orange and then orange zest or juice or candy, and so on. The wheels can guide us to specificity while also providing us with all the relevant tasting terms and scientific names.

DO YOU RUN BEER EDUCATION SESSIONS?

Yes! Please email mark@beerdredge.com to discuss this and we can develop bespoke beer training sessions for any number of people.

CAN I ORDER THE WHEELS FOR MY COMPANY/BREWERY/BAR?

Yes, of course! For large or bespoke orders, please email mark@beerdredge.com.

I'D LIKE TO DEVELOP BESPOKE TASTING WHEELS FOR MY BREWERY. IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Yes, of course! Please email mark@beerdredge.com.

I’D LIKE A TRANSLATION OF THE WHEELS. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Tell me more... please email mark@beerdredge.com and we'll see what we can do!

CAN I GET A DIGITAL COPY OF THE WHEELS?

That depends on what you want to do with the wheel… If it’s for internal training purposes, or to apply to training manual, etc, then we can license the wheel for a fee. Please email mark@beerdredge.com.

WHY ARE THE WHEELS IN BRITISH ENGLISH?

Because we are based in England. There are very few words which need to be ‘translated’ in American English (Flavor, Sulfur, Savory, Color, Caramelized, Licorice…). We can produce American-English versions of the Beer Flavour Wheels if they are required (minimum orders will apply). We have American-English versions available in poster format.

WHY DO YOU HAVE T-SHIRTS?

We were inspired by vintage American college tees and combined that with our love of hops. We chose to celebrate the Landrace Hops are they are some of the most important in the world.

HOW DO YOU SOURCE YOUR T-SHIRTS?

These t-shirts are Stanley/Stella. Read more about them here (the short version: they source all their materials sustainably, using only recycled materials and organic cotton, and do so with respect for people and the planet). We use an eco-ethical printer in London.

WHO DOES YOUR DESIGN?

All wheel and Landrace Hop t-shirt designs are done by Andrew Henderson. The Love Lager and Message in a Bottle designs were drawn by tattooist Rich Warburton.
